After a sold-out Emma Rawicz "Jazzland Sessions" album launch show at Brudenell Social Club last year for DJ Lubi, it was a given to bring her back in 2023. She is on an extensive UK late spring/early summer UK tour and drops into Leeds on Thursday 8th June with her allstar band.
Big news this year is she has signed with major German jazz label ACT Music and will release her second album "Chroma" in August. A debut single "Phlox" is out now as a taster for the album.
Support comes from our very own award winning jazz musician, double bass player and bandleader Fergus Quill. He will open the night with his trio featuring guest Leeds saxophonist Alex Fisher.
Emma Rawicz is a multi-award winning London based young saxophonist and composer already making waves on the UK music scene. This is what people in the UK jazz scene are saying :
"An astonishing new talent" - (Jamie Cullum – BBC Radio 2)
"A force to be reckoned with" (Jazzwise)
"A fast-rising star" (London Jazz News).
“A name on everyone’s lips right now” (Julian Joseph – J to Z BBC Radio 3)
At the age of 21 she had already recorded and released an eagerly awaited debut album ‘Incantation’ featuring Ant Law, made up entirely of her original compositions. Emma’s second album, recorded in summer 2022 features an all-star band of Ivo Neame, Ant Law, Conor Chaplin and Asaf Sirkis, will be released in August 2023 on the German ACT Music label.
Emma has created a name for herself both as a bandleader and playing with other people ensembles. A new arrival on the scene, she has already made an impact, regularly playing at major London jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Café and Pizza Express, both as a band leader and as a band member with other ensembles with a wide range of established musicians. In November 2022 Emma performed as a featured soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Marcin Wasilewski Trio in their tribute to Tomasz Stańko. 2022 also saw Emma and her band invited to perform at some high profile international jazz festivals. Emma is a recipient of the 2021 Drake Yolanda Award, winner of ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and was nominated for the 2022 Jazz FM ‘Instrumentalist of the year' and finalist in BBC Young Jazz Musician 2022.
Growing up in rural North Devon, Emma didn't discover jazz until the age of 15, and didn't pick up a tenor saxophone until a year later. She had spent her childhood otherwise immersed in mainly folk and classical music. Emma is a natural performer. Her music has a unique sound, fusing all her many influences, and her compositions range from lilting Afro Cuban inspired grooves to hard hitting modern jazz and funk numbers. If you were at last summer's Brudenell show, you know what all the fuss is about. If you missed it then get down to this one and find out why the UK jazz scene is raving about her.
Support comes from Leeds based double bass player Fergus Quill (The Fergus Quill Trio, Ferg's Imaginary Big Band, Skwid Ink etc). In 2022, he released his second album with his trio, "Blamo", and also won the Music Company Tina May 'UK Young Jazz Musician Of The Year' Award 2022. In February 2023, he released the long awaited debut album by his 28 piece cosmic jazz ensemble Ferg's Imaginary Big Band, featured on BBC Radio 3 "J To Z" show and on Jazz FM. Tonight he presents his regular trio - himself double bass, Nico Widdowson piano/keys, Theo Goss drums - plus a special guest. Leeds tenor/soprano sax giant Alex Fisher will be joining the trio for selective numbers. A great double bill of two the next generation rising stars of the UK jazz scene.
