The Emily Carr String Quartet Society is proud to present Music InsideOUT: Mozart.

Investigate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with a morning of music and insight into the dark and melancholic atmosphere of Mozart's Viola Quintet in G minor, K.516.

Tea, coffee, and sundries will be served followed by discussion, analysis, and a full performance of the string quintet.

This concert will feature a talented artist from the ECSQ's sixth annual Young Artist Mentorship Program, multi-instrumentalist (performing on viola), Max Francis, host, Robert Holliston and the Emily Carr String Quartet.

Max Francis is a 12-year old multi-instrumentalist and composer from Victoria, BC. Max is equally at home in the fiddle and classical worlds. In 2023, he was featured as a soloist with the Victoria Symphony, while at the National Music Festival his chamber trio was awarded first place and Max achieved the platinum standard for composition. He is the current US National Fiddle Champion for his age and the youngest person ever to win the BC Fiddle Championship and to be invited to compete at Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competition where he has twice finished in the top 10. He is a member of the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra and the Senior Collegium program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music where he studies violin with Simon MacDonald and Daniel Lapp.

Robert Holliston, an accomplished accompanist and chamber player, has performed throughout Canada, the USA, England, New Zealand, and has been heard frequently on CBC-Radio. A popular public speaker, Robert has given pre-performance lectures for Pacific Opera Victoria since 1993 and is POV’s Principal Coach. Robert is currently Head of Keyboard at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where he also teaches piano and music history, and acts as vocal coach. Robert was a founding director of the VCM Opera Studio.

The Emily Carr String Quartet has established itself as one of BC's finest music ensembles. Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony, the Emily Carr String Quartet has established itself as one of British Columbia’s finest chamber music ensembles renowned for its passionate and inspiring performances. They have participated in residencies at Stanford University and the Banff Centre and have collaborated and recorded with such artists as: the Lafayette String Quartet, Lorraine Min, Marion Newman, Jamie Parker and Arthur Rowe. The quartet has been presented by numerous concert events such as the International Society for Contemporary Music's 2017 World Music Days, Music in the Morning and Music on Main concert series in Vancouver, the Ankara Music Festival in Turkey, Hornby Festival and the Victoria Summer Music Festival. The ECSQ was featured on CBC radio's "North by Northwest" and their debut CD Hidden Treasure was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards
