About this Event

Emerging Voices: British Youth Opera

Wednesday, 18th March 2026

6:30-7:30pm

RSA House, Durham Street Auditorium

Join us for an evening with BAFTA-winning actor Joanna Scanlan and a team of young creatives who are taking on the ambitious project of building their own full-scale production of Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress.

The production is part of a British Youth Opera two-month project that will see almost 40 young professionals build their own production of the opera under the mentorship of some of the UK opera industry's biggest names. The production will then be performed across four nights at the Battersea Arts Centre's iconic grand hall.

The process for the production starts at the RSA, with opportunities for you to learn more about the programme, meet the young creatives and hear musical extracts form the upcoming show. You'll hear readings by Joanna Scanlan of extracts from letters between Stravinsky and his librettist WH Auden.

Joanna will be joined by the Chief Executive of the British Youth Opera and Chair of the event Anna Patalong who will be interviewing our young artist creative team about their plans for the Rake's Progress.

Open to all - Fellows of The RSA will be given priority booking.

Speakers:

  • Joanna Scanlan, Actress and Writer

Chair:

  • Anna Patalong, Chief Executive, British Youth Opera
