Emergence - "Coming into being" or "the distinct patterns and behaviors that can arise out of complex systems"
Have you ever been at a jam or in a contact dance and wondered, what am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to hold my attention? What happens next? Have you ever felt stuck in regards to how to relate to the space? Maybe even experiencing feelings of exclusion in a shared movement space? If any of this applies to you, this workshop is for you.
In our time together, we will be learning how to connected through attention and awareness based practices. We will be building our skills in this improvisational form by training how to dance as a collective, noticing composition, and weaving into and out of dances.
In this workshop, we will be exploring contact improvisation beyond the "fundamentals". To be more specific, this workshop will be exploring more than weight sharing, rolling point of contact, lifts, etc. Instead, our main foci will be themes for improvisations, scores, building relational intelligence, and composition.
You might be wondering, "what does this have to do with emergence?" And my answer is: "Everything!". By creating structured framework to improvise within, we hone our attention (collectively), creating fertile ground for spontaneous emergence. Emergence in this context involves improvisation that arises from this collective attention versus ideas or preconceived planning. One way of saying it is that we are training our mind bodies as empty vessels that allow for improvisational magic to be birthed. One of my teachers says, constraints are the pathway to creativity.
