Wer einem Konzert von Emel Mathlouthi beiwohnt, sieht die Transformation einer Sängerin zu einem Gesamtkunstwerk. Und würde sie nicht so umwerfend präzise singen, wären ihre Kompositionen nicht so mitreißend: Allein das Lichtdesign, Kostüm und ihr Sound sind eines Weltstars würdig. Und auch wenn sie keine Stadien füllt, der Wille zu großer Kunst steckt in jedem Ton. Genauso wie der Wille zur Welt. Emels Blick und künstlerischer Zugriff haben sich stets geweitet, zu M.I.A. oder Björk, zu Reggaeton, HipHop und zeitgenössischer Elektronik. Und ihr aktuelles Album Mra ist ein feministisches Statement durch und durch. Denn ausschließlich Frauen haben an seiner Entstehung mitgewirkt.
Mittlerweile hat die Tunesierin ihren Wohnsitz in New York. Berühmt wurde sie zuerst in der Heimat, denn ihr Song „Kelmti Horra“ („My Word is Free“) wurde zur Hymne der tunesischen Revolution Ende 2010. Was international für Beachtung sorgte. Im Jahr 2015 trat sie sogar bei der Verleihung des Friedensnobelpreises auf. Ägyptens Tageszeitung Al-Ahram erhob sie zur „Fairuz ihrer Generation“. Und wenn Emel in einem Atemzug mit der panarabischen Superstar genannt wird, dann hat sie den Status erlangt, der wenigen Popstars vorenthalten ist: Emel ist eine Seelentransmitterin, die dem Schmerz der Welt begegnet und ihn für uns verarbeitet.

Anyone who attends a concert by Emel Mathlouthi sees the transformation of a singer into a total work of art. And if she didn’t sing with such stunning precision, her compositions wouldn’t be as captivating: the lighting design, costume and sound alone are worthy of a world star. And even if she doesn’t fill stadiums, the will to create great art is in every note. Just like the will to see the world. Emel’s gaze and artistic approach have always widened, to M.I.A. or Björk, to Reggaeton, HipHop and contemporary Electronics. And her latest album Mra is a throrough feminist statement since only women were involved in its creation.
Emel now resides in New York. To the word's audience she initially surfaced from her home country Tunisia. Her song “Kelmti Horra” (“My Word is Free”) became the anthem of the Tunisian revolution at the end of 2010, which attracted international attention. In 2015, she even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Egypt’s daily newspaper Al-Ahram named her the “Fairuz of her generation”. And if Emel is mentioned in the same breath as the pan-Arab superstar it means she has achieved a status that few pop stars are able to reach: Emel is a soul transmitter who encounters the pain of the world and processes it for us.
