Location: The Quaker Meeting House, 188 Woodhouse Lane, LS2 9DX.It is said that around the 4th Century, somewhere in India, the great saint and scholar Asanga committed himself, in an isolated cave, to meeting the future Buddha Maitreya. He practiced relentlessly for 12 years until finally, just when he was ready to give up, Maitreya appeared to him. Among the teachings he received was the Uttara Tantra, the Buddha-nature teachings.
This evening will explore the analogies presented in this ancient text as a means of refining our conceptual understanding of our true nature in order to bring us closer to that realisation. Maitreya revealed that we all possess the tatagathagharba, the seed of enlightenment within us, unaffected by the layers of confusion of ego that surround it, and ever-ready to manifest perfectly and vividly, just as an old and dusty mirror is ever-ready to reflect everything, vividly and accurately once the surface obscuration of dust is removed.
The evening will include simple breathwork and movement exercises for relaxed and present embodiment, guided meditation, and a talk on the Buddha-nature teachings of Maitreya.
The evening will include breathwork and movement exercises for relaxed and present embodiment, and a talk on seeing life as a collaborative interplay that is arising for our benefit if we simply go along with what is presented to us.
According to Buddhism, ‘ego’ refers to a fundamental and self-sustaining mistaken perspective on who we are, and how we are related to the moment of our existence. Having solidified our seperation from the phenomena we experience, we find ourselves caught up in the endless activitity of attempting to create some permanent and stable fulfilment as seperate beings. Rather than embracing each moment of nowness, we instead find ourselves judging and evaluating it, deciding what we like and want more of, what we don’t like and want to push away or destroy, and what we see no value in and view indifferently (known as the Three Poisons of ego – Passion, Agreession and ignorance).
Through training the mind, and cultivating a fresh perspective of benevolence and sacredness, we can begin to tune in to the life that is ready to unfold for us whenever we are able to relax into it and be led by love, courage and openness.
