FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“Emancipation Day Reggae Bash” to Celebrate Jamaican Freedom, Resistance and Roots Reggae at the Middle East Nightclub
Featuring reggae legend Errol Strength & Conscious Band alongside an all-star lineup of Boston reggae artists
CAMBRIDGE, MA — Boston’s reggae community will gather in a powerful celebration of music, liberation, and cultural consciousness on Saturday, August 1 at the Middle East Nightclub in Cambridge for the Emancipation Day Reggae Bash, presented by Lion Production.
Headlining the evening is legendary vocalist Errol Strength & Conscious Band, with additional performances by Jah Rico, NyJah DiOrganizah, King Rhymez, Journalist, Surprise Guest, and Abdul Baki with Root Fiyah Band. Showtime begins at 8:00 p.m.
The event honors Jamaican Emancipation Day, commemorating the abolition of slavery in the British colonies on August 1, 1834, while also affirming the ongoing struggle for mental, cultural, and spiritual liberation.
Organizers say the event is rooted in the message:
“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery and break the chains of colonial mentality.”
The night will combine conscious reggae music, cultural pride, and historical reflection in the spirit of resistance, unity, and liberation.
Errol Strength, recently honored with Boston’s 2026 Afro-Caribbean Black History Award, is widely regarded as one of the pillars of reggae music in Boston and New England. His work has been recognized as part of the historic roots reggae movement that flourished in Cambridge and Boston during the 1970s and 1980s.
Presented by Lion Production, the Emancipation Day Reggae Bash continues a longstanding tradition of reggae promotion and Caribbean cultural celebration in Boston. The event aims to unite generations through roots music and conscious vibrations while honoring reggae’s enduring role as music of resistance and upliftment.
Also appearing on the bill is Abdul Baki with Root Fiyah Band, a longtime reggae keyboardist, vocalist, bandleader, and cultural organizer known for championing roots reggae music and conscious cultural expression throughout Massachusetts and New England. Through live performances, community events, and collaborations with reggae artists across generations, Baki has remained dedicated to preserving reggae as a vehicle for truth, resistance, and upliftment.
Reflecting that mission, Abdul Baki describes the spirit of Root Fiyah this way:
“Music is the heartbeat of iration — it carries the message of love, truth, and upliftment. When I’n’I play, it’s not just for entertainment, it’s for elevation. Root Fiyah a come fi chant down babylon with word, sound and power.”
