About This OpportunityServing during the Emancipating Hearts and Minds retreat is more than a set of tasks. It's an expression of gratitude and a powerful way to hold sacred space for others as they journey inward. Your willingness to offer your time and heart in support of those moving through this path of inner growth and liberation means everything to us.
As a Dharma server, you're entering into practice with us. You'll observe Noble Silence of body, speech, and mind, honor the five precepts, and move through shared spaces with care, humility, and attentiveness, tending to the unseen needs of the day so that retreatants can turn inward and deepen their practice.
In selfless action, the ten pāramīs are nurtured and the grip of ego gradually softens. However you're able to serve, your presence is part of the collective unfolding of liberation.
Volunteering is practice. May your service strengthen your steps on the path of Dhamma, leading toward liberation, freedom from suffering, and the peace of true happiness.
What will volunteers do?
Care for the kitchen space — preparing meals, serving food, refilling during meals, and breaking down and restoring the kitchen after each meal in preparation for the next.
Tend to the Dhamma Hall and common spaces — moving through shared spaces with care, ensuring they are clean, stocked, and ready to receive participants throughout the day.
Follow the daily schedule — which runs from 4AM to 10PM, including breakfast, lunch, broth and beverage service, and evening wind down, each followed by clean up.
Give preference to participants for meals, accommodations, and use of all facilities — waiting to eat until after participants, using showers during off-times, and minimizing presence in meditation spaces.
Observe Noble Silence — no words, eye contact, gestures, written notes, or device use on the premises. Any serious concerns are brought to Venerable directly, and smaller issues left in the envelope labeled "For Venerable" in the kitchen.
Participate in meditation if they choose — by speaking with Venerable before the retreat begins.
Handle occasional tasks beyond food and cleaning as needed — trusting their level of mindfulness and being proactive in tending to the needs of participants and the space.
What will volunteers need to bring or wear?
We invite you to come dressed in a way that honors the stillness of the space. Comfortable, modest clothing that covers the shoulders, stomach, and legs, loose, easy to move in, and simple in color, supports the collective intention we are all holding. White and plain colors are welcome and encouraged. Please be mindful of words, graphics, or images on clothing that may distract from the shared intention of the space. Let your clothing be part of your practice.
