Join us for an engaging afternoon with author Ellen Levy, as she reads from her new release, A Book About Ray, published by MIT Press.
This beautifully crafted book explores the life and work of Ray Johnson, a collage artist and mail art pioneer known as “New York’s most famous unknown artist.” Johnson’s career was a tongue-in-cheek performance in itself, as he navigated the art world on his own terms—courting institutions while critiquing them through his ever-shifting art forms of collage, performance, and correspondence.
Levy’s writing draws readers into Johnson’s world, offering fresh insights into his circle of contemporaries, including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns. Whether you’re a seasoned admirer or new to Johnson’s work, A Book About Ray paints an intriguing portrait of an American original whose influence on art—and even the U.S. Postal Service—endures today.
Marmo will offer a special aperitivo menu with unique small plates and drinks available for purchase.
Ellen will also be giving the Art Lecture on Wednesday, November 20, at Evergreen from 11:30-1. The lecture will be in person in the Recital Hall, and also streaming (https://evergreen.zoom.us/j/86447124526).
