Ella Thompson invites you to join her for the launch of the stunningly soulful new album Ripple on the Wing on Saturday February 8th at the Night Cat.Helping her celebrate this auspicious occasion are very special guests: instrumental funk icons The Pro-Teens and Naarm’s esteemed soul queen, and rare soul collector, Miss Goldie.
Echoing 1960s lowrider love songs and sweet-soul anthems with haunting cinematic arrangements, Ripple on the Wing is a sweet & spooky modern take on classic soul music.
Ella's lyrics explore themes of belonging, both to the microscopic & the universal. She invites listeners to contemplate the vast expanse of human emotion and the interconnectedness of all things. The album is backed by an impeccable band featuring members of Surprise Chef alongside other local soul luminaries.
Live, Ella’s show is a hypnotic, hard-hitting presentation of her voice propelled by an oh-so tasteful rhythm section and blazing horns. When opening for soul legend Lee Fields in Melbourne, he described her as: “One of the most creative individuals I have heard in a very long time.”
Ella grew up listening & learning from Australian soul Icon Renee Geyer, who mentored her as a teenager and took Ella on her first ever tour. Since then she has toured with the likes of Mark Ronson, and supported artists such as Lee Fields, Thee Sacred Souls, Jalen Ngonda & Angel Olsen.
The last 12 months has brought a prolific hot streak of releases, with 2023's breakout Domino, followed up with November’s Ripple on the Wing, both out on legendary soulful imprint Hopestreet Recordings.
This is a show not to be missed!
