Gardens provide a place of solace-a place of escape used for thinking and creative inspiration for writers including Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, Daphne du Maurier, Ted Hughes and Derek Jarman. Elizabeth Gaskell was one such writer.
The garden of her ‘large, cheerful, airy house quite out of Manchester smoke' was a walled off private area where Elizabeth felt that she could relax 'without a bonnet’. She grew carnations ,campion ,gladioli and pinks and for food radishes, peas, lettuce and cauliflower.
Elizabeth was married to William Gaskell Minister of Cross St.Unitarian Chapel in Manchester. They had four daughters Marianne, Meta, Florence and Julia.
Mrs.Gaskell was an accomplished author with a perception of Victorian life at all levels-a woman beyond her time.
We will have a guided tour of the fully restored house and be able to explore the delightful garden followed by tea and cake. All areas being accessible to all levels of ability. See the website for booking details https://www.lancsgt.org.uk/june-event-3/
