The Jazz Station's One Set Wednesday concert series aims to spotlight emerging student musicians. This evening we present bassist Eli Hansen and his quintet. Anchored by Eli Hansen’s steady upright bass playing, this ensemble is influenced by a number of styles including ECM, free-jazz, gospel, and indie. Eli Hansen is an upright and electric bassist, synthesist, engineer and educator from Roseburg, Oregon. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in the Jazz Studies program at the University of Oregon and is an active member of the Pacific Northwest music scene. As a sideman, he has worked with Eugene and Portland luminaries such as Joe Manis, Roger Woods, Olem Alves, Ehren Ebbage, Julia Logue, Golden Boy, BendreTheGiant, and Nick Gamer. Additionally, he has been featured as a soloist and accompanist in groups such as the University of Oregon Wind Ensemble, the Oregon Jazz Ensemble, JazzArts Oregon, and the Eugene Concert Choir.
Jay Veach is a drummer/educator born in South Korea. He has played in bands such as the Oregon Jazz Ensemble, Impulse New Ensemble, the Jazz Kings, and resides locally in Eugene. He is the bandleader for the Generations Wedding and Events band, and currently teaches students in various middle schools, high schools, and colleges.
Originally from San Jose, CA, Ben Harris concurrently serves as a Graduate Educator and Graduate student at the University of Oregon, where he previously earned his undergraduate degree in jazz studies. Ben has studied saxophone with Idit Shner and Steve Owen, as well as flute with Dr. Jacqueline Cordova-Arrington. In addition to performing in the Oregon Jazz Ensemble and JazzArts Oregon, UO’s top large ensemble and combo respectively, Ben is also a regular performer in the Eugene/Springfield area, both a bandleader and a sideman. Additionally, Ben teaches private lessons and composes original music performed by various groups.
Luke Turner is a saxophonist, composer, instructor, and bandleader from Eugene, OR. He currently attends the University of Oregon’s Jazz Studies program, and is a growing presence in the area’s music scene. For several years, he’s had a complete love for music, and brings a heavy influence from the jazz idiom. He strives to show his appreciation for those who have made the music what it is today, while also bringing his own conglomeration of sounds to the table. While being an active performer in the area, he also teaches private saxophone lessons.
Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Antonio Soltero is a guitarist, composer, and arranger. Starting on violin from an early age, Antonio switched to learning the guitar which quickly became his passion. Throughout his High School years he studied with Austin guitarist Glenn Rexach and is currently studying with Paul Krueger, Avery Scanlon, Keith Brown, and Joe Manis at the University of Oregon. Antonio has studied and performed a wide variety of styles ranging from Jazz, Indie Rock, Funk, Bluegrass, Salsa, and Mexican folkloric music. Antonio has performed alongside artists such as Randy Porter, Charlie Doggett, Stockton Helbing, and Diane Schurr. He currently teaches private lessons as well as performs throughout the Eugene and Austin area.
