Elgar’s The Kingdom: 140 Choral Voices in Concert

Experience a transcendent evening of classical music in the heart of ‘Elgar Country’ this spring, as the 140 voices of Worcester Festival Choral Society, world-class soloists and symphony orchestra perform one of Sir Edward Elgar’s greatest choral works, The Kingdom, at Worcester Cathedral.
Written after the success of The Dream of Gerontius and The Apostles, The Kingdom was Elgar’s third, large oratorio; premiered in Birmingham in 1906 and conducted by the composer himself at Worcester Cathedral in 1933. Its story focuses on the lives of Jesus’s disciples and the Holy Women – portrayed as ordinary people who encounter extraordinary events – as they lay the foundations of Christianity. This profoundly exciting and moving work contains some of Elgar’s finest choral and orchestral writing, from astonishing dramatic passages to gentle conversational moments, as well as the hauntingly beautiful soprano solo, ‘The sun goeth down’.
Accompanying Worcester Festival Choral Society are stellar soloists Anita Watson (soprano), Rebecca Afonwy-Jones (mezzo soprano), Austin Gunn (tenor) and Dominic Sedgwick (baritone), with the Meridian Sinfonia symphony orchestra, all under the baton of Worcester Cathedral's director of music Samuel Hudson.
So put the date in your diary to enjoy this true ‘choral great’ this spring!
