“The first true horror film.” - Roger Ebert on The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
With their live score, Elf Freedom dives deep into the psychological labyrinth of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari – their music amplifying the film’s eerie visuals and twisted narrative, drawing you into a world where reality and illusion blur. The disorienting sets and nightmarish characters of the film are mirrored in Elf Freedom’s captivating sound, heightening the tension and enriching the timeless story with new layers of meaning. As societal tensions and power struggles echo in today’s world, Elf Freedom’s performance reflects the film’s themes of control, madness, and the search for truth. The haunting story of Dr. Caligari, a tyrant who manipulates and controls, resonates with contemporary fears of authority and blind obedience. Through their powerful soundscapes, Elf Freedom invites you to confront these themes and emerge with a sense of clarity and empowerment.
Step into the macabre and surreal world of THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, Robert Weine’s 1920 German expressionist horror classic that has mesmerized audiences for over a century! Experience it like never before as psychedelic channelers Elf Freedom (returning to PRS after their sold-out live score for Fritz Lang’s Metropolis) reimagine the legendary silent film with an original, electrifying live score, breathing new life into its iconic images through haunting melodies and immersive soundscapes – all set to a 16mm print of the classic provided and projected by See It On 16mm! This very special event also doubles as a record release celebration for the band’s new album, Soul Heart Sun!
Regarded by many critics and historians as the first horror film, Caligari tells the story of a crazed carnival hypnotist (Werner Krause, as the titular doctor) who has taken control over a hapless, hypnotized somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt), who is claimed to be able to see the future – particularly as it pertains to murder…murder committed by none other than himself! But is Cesare responsible for his bloody deeds, or is it all the work of the twisted Dr. Caligari, the man pulling his mesmerized strings? Now over a century old, this truly revolutionary piece of cinema “jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the German Expressionist film movement into history…director Robert Wiene and a team of visionary designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted” (KinoLorber.com) – and we’ll be able to experience it all with a rare 16mm film print!
Don’t miss this extraordinary event where music and film converge to create a transformative journey into the heart of darkness. Secure your tickets now and let Elf Freedom’s sonic alchemy transport you to a new dimension of experience with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari !
