Elevation and Depth: Touring the Caucasus in 1914

From the 1830s onward, Baedeker guidebooks delivered the world to intrepid travelers. In 1914, the Leipzig-based publisher released an English edition of its Handbook for Russia. Whether you aimed to meander through Finland or ride the Trans-Siberian Railway, you would want this book in your pocket. The Handbook leads travelers through towns and villages, providing notes on where to stay, where to eat, and how to spend one's time (and money). If you want to know how the empire was experienced by foreigners on the eve of World War I, the Handbook is a great place to start.

At this event, Kelly O'Neill will discuss her study of Baedeker's description of the towns, coast, and countryside of Georgia, as well as the famous mountains to the north. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore Baedeker's maps of Tbilisi and Batumi, follow the itineraries that led from coast to peak, and learn how the design of these experiences shaped ideas about the region.
