About this Event
Our E.L.I.T.E. Summit (Elevating Hispanic/Latino Learners by Innovating Teaching and Education) /12th Annual Hispanic/Latino Studies Summer Institute is a yearly event created and provided by the Palm Beach County School District Office of African, African American, Latino, Holocaust, and Gender Studies. This year's theme is Teaching Content Literacy through the Arts and Project-Based Learning. Workshops will focus on these concepts by demonstrating how to infuse Hispanic/Latino studies into Social Studies, E.L.A., and other content areas.
The scheduled events are as follows:
- June 10th: Kickoff, keynote speaker, whole-group workshop presenters, and student presentations 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- June 11th: Welcome back remarks, keynote speaker, special performances, and concurrent sessions, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
We will have these confirmed outstanding keynote speakers and whole group workshop presenters:
- Dr. Barbara Ganson is a College of Arts and Letters Faculty Member at F.A.U. and the former Director of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at F.A.U. She specializes in two fields of study: Latin American history and aviation history.
- Eduardo Chavez, Film Director. In addition to being a director, speaker, and activist, Eduardo is the co-founder of Latindia Studios and a member of the Speakers' Board for the Chavez Institute for Law and Social Justice. He is also the host of the podcast We Are Latinx.
- Jose R. Mendez, Visual Artist. Jose is the Hatch 1121 Gallery Coordinator, Norton Museum of Art Teaching Artist, R. Dot Arts & Creative Agency Creative Director
- Christopher Berrios, S.D.P.B.C. Alumni and Vocal Performance Master's of Music Candidate at F.A.U. Christopher will share his journey through music and his passion for language learning. Chris will be performing for our audiences during the two days of our summit.
