Eleonore Biezunski will be joined by cantor, songwriter, dance leader and multi instrumentalist Sarah Myerson (vocals, poyk, and other instruments), multi instrumentalist, composer, arranger and educator Ilya Shneyveys (accordion and other instruments), the wonderful Deborah Strauss (violin, vocals) and Zilyin (clarinet) for a program of old and new music.
Eléonore Biezunski is an award-winning Parisian singer/violinist/songwriter and scholar now living in NYC. An avid collector of Yiddish music, she has led several projects and has collaborated and recorded with a large number of well-known Jewish performers in the US and abroad. Her composition “Tshemodan” was voted Best New Yiddish Song at the 2021 Bubbe Awards. As YIVO’s Sound Archivist, Eléonore coordinates the Ruth Rubin Legacy website She has a PhD from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, is a member of the Klezmer Institute’s KMDMP and Klezmer Archive Project and is a recipient of an NYSCA Folk Arts Apprenticeship.
Sarah Myerson is an ordained cantor actively working to connect egalitarian Jewish religious with secular/cultural Yiddish communities. She serves as the Kol Bo Spiritual Leader of Roosevelt Island Jewish Congregation and lives in Brooklyn, New York. She teaches Yiddish song workshops and Yiddish dance workshops worldwide (for example at Yiddish New York and Yiddish Summer Weimar) and online; leads Yiddish dance, composes and performs as a multi-instrumentalist in a variety of musical settings. She has a Master’s and Hazzan Diploma from the JTS, and a Bachelor of Music (Composition Honors) from the Sydney Conservatorium.
Ilya Shneyveys (accordion/piano) is an international performer, accordionist and multi- instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger and producer of contemporary Jewish music, from klezmer and Yiddish folk song to fusion and experimental projects. Long-time faculty member at Yiddish Summer Weimar, he is the artistic director of the Yiddish psychedelic rock band Forshpil and the Caravan Orchestra, for which he was awarded the 2017 Shimon- Peres-Prize.Originally from Riga, Latvia, Ilya has been traveling the world for the last 15 years promoting Yiddish music and culture and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
Deborah Strauss (violin) is an internationally acclaimed klezmer violinist and educator who has been active in the klezmer and Yiddish music scene for over 30 years. She is a member of the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, was a long-time member of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and has performed with the Klezmatics. She has appeared on numerous recordings and was featured in the Emmy Award-winning film, Itzhak Perlman: In the Fiddler’s House. Deborah performs and teaches annually at the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, Yiddish Summer Weimar and KlezKanada. She is also an award-winning children’s educator and a highly regarded Yiddish dance leader. With Dan Blacksberg, Deborah is co-director of the instrumental music program and the dance program at Yiddish New York and, with Alan Bern, is the author of Klezmer Duets for Violin and Accordion, published in 2017 by Universal Edition, Vienna.
Zilyin has been collecting European klezmer archives for the last 15 years, working with Joel Rubin, Kurt Bjorling, Jeffrey Wollock, and Pete Rushevsky. Zilyin teaches an perform klezmer all around the world. Zilyin specializes in playing for dancing, working closely with Avia Moore, Christina Crowder, Steve Weintraub, Alan Bern and Zev Feldman to accompany Yiddish dance at various festivals around the world, including Klezkanada, Ashkenaz festival, Boston Jewish Music festival, Montréal Jewish festival, Yiddish New York, and Yiddish Summer Weimar.
