Elegy - Carol Elkovich

Elegy is a deconstructed painting that acts as a parasitic intervention upon architecture and reflects upon both the beauty and terror of nature. Consisting of many thousands of hand painted pieces, the installation was made over the past three years during the COVID-19 pandemic as a process of marking time and contemplation of the extraordinary experience. The installation offers a space and moment of contemplation for viewers to process the losses, isolation, and sacrifices made during the global pandemic that has changed our world and will be long remembered. The installation includes a metaphorical wailing wall where viewers are invited to tie a white strip of cloth to a tree branch as a catharsis and in elegy to our collective losses. This element nods to Cherokee, Lakota, and Buddhist traditions for healing and positivity for the future.
