This recital brings together three striking voices from Central Europe: Janáček, Szymanowski and the Czech composer Vítězslava Kaprálová.

Though writing at roughly the same time, each created a highly individual musical language.

Janáček’s Violin Sonata is by turns intimate, passionate and intensely expressive, while Szymanowski’s Mythes opens up a more sensuous and atmospheric world. Kaprálová’s music, meanwhile, reveals a composer of remarkable imagination whose career was cut tragically short, in 1940, at the age of 25.

Together, these works make for a varied and absorbing programme, full of colour and character. Eleanor Ryan (violin) and Patrick Hemmerlé (piano) explore three different musical voices, united by the richness and originality of this Central European repertoire.
