About this Event
Join NEFER Bookcafe for an intimate evening with historian LaShawn Harris celebrating her powerful book, Tell Her Story: Eleanor Bumpurs & the Police Killing That Galvanized New York City.
Through personal memory, eyewitness accounts, and deep archival research, Harris revisits the life and legacy of Eleanor Bumpurs, a 66-year-old Black grandmother killed by NYPD officers during an attempted eviction in the Bronx in 1984. More than a retelling, Tell Her Story examines the anti-policing movement that emerged in response and the lasting impact of Bumpurs’s death on New York City and beyond.
In conversation with Andre Easton, Harris will explore history, memory, justice, and the importance of community witness in a time when the stories of Black women lost to police violence continue to demand remembrance and action.
The evening will include:
• Author talk & moderated conversation
• Audience Q&A
• Book signing
Come to deepen your understanding of the roots of today’s justice movements, honor the life of Eleanor Bumpurs, and gather in thoughtful community for a conversation that is as timely as it is necessary.
