In a few weeks the congregation of Risen Hope will be asked by our Nominating Committee to begin submitting names of men and women as potential candidates for deacon. We will also be looking for names of two more men to serve as elders on to our elder council, making us a council of 8 men in total.
More details about the nominating process will be shared by the Nominating Committee in the coming weeks. But before we even get too far ahead of ourselves, we thought it best to spend some time on Sunday mornings clarifying from the Scriptures what makes these two offices, elder and deacon, distinct from one another. The roles of elders and deacons have been conflated by churches in the past and we want to try our best to avoid any confusion.
We also want to give clear biblical instruction to our people so they can be praying and thinking about who might truly be a good fit for the role of deacon or elder going forward. Therefore, this Sunday we’re beginning a short topical sermon series called Elders and Deacons: Multiplying Ministry Together. Pastor Jayson, Pastor Jimmy, and our elder chairman, Ben Whitley, will be delivering this series of messages over the next several weeks.
We truly hope this brief series will encourage you! God is doing wonderful things at Risen Hope Baptist Church and it is our firm conviction that carefully selected, and properly deployed, deacons has the potential to greatly multiply our ministry effectiveness as a church. For that to happen, it’s important for all of us that call Risen Hope home to be clear and on the same page about these two offices.
