Elbe Valley Wine and Vineyards Hike

WHY GO?

The centuries-old wine region that sits on the Elbe, just outside of Dresden is filled with rolling vineyards, and pristine castles and palaces. Here you can find and sample some of the country’s best, award-winning Grauburgunder and Riesling wines.

The walk along the Saxon Wine Route, takes in some of the best sites. Along the trip we will dine in the gardens of Schloss Wackerbarth, sample some of the best wines, while walking between Winery to Winery. 

Whether you’re a wine lover or not, the walk takes in some of the best sights of the region, with the steep vineyards providing challenging climbs for hiking enthusiasts. It’s a great opportunity to see some of the most historical and cultured wine producers in Germany, while taking in and learning about the tastes, flavors, and views.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?

• Schloss Wackerbarth: a baroque castle surrounded by gardens and vineyards, and home to a local, award-winning sparkling wine
• Hoflößnitz 17th century municipal winery estate and museum
• Elbe River Valley: One of Germany’s most prestigious and beautiful waterways and valleys
• Wettinhöhe Castle: A 19th century castle that sits a top of the steep vineyards looking out across the valley
• Forest Steam Railway: 150 year-old, narrow gauge, steam railway (train ride not included)
• Weingut Karl Friedrich Aust: An award-winning winery and garden with stunning views and great wines

TRIP DETAILS:

Meeting location & time:

• Meet in Berlin Central train station @ 8:30 am on Saturday morning.

Finishing location & time:

• Berlin Central Station @ 9:00pm on Saturday

Note:

• Exact platform to be advised the day before event in the whatsapp group for this event.
• If you arrive late, then you will miss the train. Being punctual or early is a must!

Hiking Distance & duration: 12km from Coswig to Radebeul.

Kid Friendly: No

Difficulty: Easy – hiking at relaxed pace on well-marked paths, woodland grounds, sure-footedness & good fitness required.

Price: Starting from 40 Euros.

What is Included:

• Community Leader & guide for the entire duration (Guide speaks English & German). Note: English is the main language spoken on this trip.
• All public transportation for the entire trip starting from the meeting location to the finishing location (based on ticket selection).
• Short boat ride across Elbe river.

Other Things of Note & Items to pack:

• German weather can be unpredictable at the best of times; please pack for all eventuality, both and rain and sunshine, that means brining:
• Rainproof jacket, trousers (optional) or umbrella (optional)
• A rainproof cover for your bag
• Firm footwear should you need to be walking through muddy terrain
• Suncream / sunglasses (optional)

WHO IS THE COMMUNITY GUIDE FOR THE TRIP?

Dan Cole (see pic below) is the community guide for this trip. Dan is a published travel author, having written Beer Hiking Berlin, and Epic Bike Rides of Europe. Born in the UK, Dan has been residing in Germany for over 15 years, making the most of that time exploring the Bavarian Alps, Franken countryside, and riverside hiking trails. He also loves long-distance running, bike touring, and music, and plays in several bands in Berlin, and DJ's frequently.

He is currently working on his next book, Hiking & Drinking Europe, and is currently researching some of the best wine trails and brewery tours that Europe has to offer. His passions? Watching sunsets from Alpine mountain huts, and the sunrise across the Elbe River.
