EL SUEÑO, presents NI DE AQUÍ NI DE ALLÁ– an invitation to experience Chicano identity
and its continual search for home as a living, evolving expression of resilience,
resistance, and belonging.
NI DE AQUÍ NI DE ALLÁ means “neither from here nor from there.” Our work is a
recognition that we as Mexican-Americans live in the in-between– displaced from our
ancestral home, but held at arm's length by our American peers. NI DE AQUÍ NI DE ALLÁ
reflects the toll of the U.S/Mexico border on our culture, identities and communities. In
this current political climate, the border is a weapon that disconnects us from our lands
and ancestral migratory patterns. It explores these issues and confronts them head on
with vulnerability and unity. This project delves into themes of displacement, resistance,
and the reclamation of cultural identity. It blends traditional danza Azteca, street styles,
and contemporary dance in a way that reflects our dual identity as Mexican-American
people and honors our indigenous ancestry.
NI DE AQUÍ NI DE ALLÁ contextualizes complex inequities faced by Chicanos. It preserves
and uplifts practices that are central to culture and Indigenous identity, and offers a
space for resistance against ongoing erasure of Indigenous cultures.
Dancers and Chicano collaborators from across the United States– Atlanta Georgia,
Brooklyn New York, Los Angeles California, Albuquerque New Mexico, and Seattle
Washington, join forces weaving together our personal narratives. NI DE AQUÍ NI DE ALLÁ
allows audiences to explore their own connections, contributions, and confront their
complacency. It provides a platform for redefining what it means to belong to a
community or culture in a contemporary context.
The choreography is grounded in traditional Indigenous movement practices while
drawing from a diverse group of dance artists who specialize in breaking, house, popping,
and contemporary dance. This blend of movement genres and experiences speaks to the
diversity of the Chicano experience. While deepening its connection between people and
their land, through fluid, grounded, and powerful movement--the dancers embody the
stories of struggle, survival, and resilience. The dancers channel the spirits of their
ancestors while embodying new expressions of identity and belonging — revitalizing a
connection to movement that has been erased, and redefined by colonization.
