Brief history: Gloria Anzaldúa was born and raised in El Valle. She was valedictorian of Edinburg High School in 1962 and graduated from legacy institution Pan American College in 1968. She went on to publish numerous books, and her theories and writings continue to influence poets, writers, artists, scholars, and more. A few years after her transition in 2004, local poets began the tradition of honoring her work in her home community with the formation of the community-based Gloria Anzaldúa Legacy (GAL) Project in 2007 and later the Valley International Poetry Festival. In 2008, faculty and students at UTPA collaborated with community members and the SSGA on the first El Retorno event on campus. Many years of these collaborations led to a literary landmark for Anzaldúa that was celebrated at UTRGV in 2022.
