Tangueras y tangueros,A new concept is born. This El Quinto (meaning the 5th because happening on the 5th Sunday) event is to attract more people into our little world called Argentine tango dancing - as we are not growing since a quite while. It is based on the idea of having the non-tango taste tango by teaming up with the tango. Like a job fair where employers meet potential employees; just tanguera/os including teachers meeting new potential floor dwellers to let them feel and sense what it is to dance on the most beautiful music ever written for close embrace partner dances.
Also, honestly, we, in the tango ‘community’, could be a bit, even more than a bit, warm and welcoming to new people in our midst. In salsa it is common to offer new people to dance two songs with them yet in tango we give them the look ‘well, maybe in a couple of years depending on your progress’. Indeed, we are level-obsessed versus fun-obsessed. Obviously there are reasons for that in the milonga as we have codigos, ronda, technicalities, etc. Yet we tend to be somewhat on the extreme side especially toward beginning leaders who have to learn a lot.
The solution: práctica, where senior and junior dancers mix up and knowledge and skills get transferred. As it was in the Golden Age of tango.
Another delicate matter is that we lose 80-90% of starting tanguera/os within their first year. These never make it past their first milongas. Yes, tango is not for everyone and the learning curve is steep but this low retaining rate should not be accepted as a given. We need to talk about that but not here and not now.
Six (?) questions in life: who, what, where, when, how, and why. In random order, above and below.
=>this event will be updated as we move closer in time, when more things become known<=
🏫 VENUE
Global Dance Center (GDC), Diemen-Zuid. There is a 300m2 floor -see attached pictures- at 3-4 minutes walk from the Diemen-Zuid metro + train station and by car it is just off the highway with free/cheap parking on Sundays.
🗓️ SCHEDULE/PLAN
• 14:00-17:30 guided práctica with mini-classes, oldskool style meaning: tangueras and tangueros (<-you!) on the floor with total tango babies, showing them, letting them feel, dancing baby steps with them, socializing. There will be teachers (tbd who exactly can be persuaded/bribed) doing mini-classes of 15 minutes every hour on absolute basics, and to supervise/guide the floor.
• 17:30-22:30 milonga/salon with DJ Richard Frisart playing the best tunes and tandas bringing down da house!
The afternoon and evening will be bridged with an abundant snacks table and pizza. There is some restaurants around the corner in case you prefer to dine out.
🛜 PROMOTION
Promotion to the non-tango world will be massive e.g. via selected large social media channels, expat community groups, dance schools, social hubs, cultural agendas, ambassadors, selected venues and stores, you, me, etc. The aim is to reach a somewhat younger age category (no offense, I am close to 60).
🛟 SUPPORT
If you can offer us support in any of the following areas, PM me:
• Editing a video flyer for social media
• Chairs & tables; we need about 25 chairs and 6 small tables
• Sponsoring as this is an event to help the tango scene grow i.e. new people might/should flow into schools, practicás, and milongas <- you may benefit
• Promotion e.g. by word-of-mouth, distributing flyers at non-tango dance schools, community centers, social media, etc.
