This talk by historian Dr Robyn Atcheson explores the workhouses of Ulster from their introduction in the 19th century through to today
About this Event

Using her most recent research, Robyn will give participants an insight into how workhouses were used in Ulster, how they experienced the distress of the Famine years and how the institutions changed in the 20th century.

By using examples from across Ulster, we will look at how many workhouses survive and why. We will also explore how this part of our shared heritage is at risk of being forgotten by looking at the commemoration of these spaces and their associated graveyards. Robyn will also share about her recent successful campaign to memorialise the forgotten Belfast workhouse burial ground.
