About this Event

Efficacy in Early Modern Healing

This two-day workshop brings together scholars working on the many ways in which early modern people discussed, used, accepted or dismissed efficacy claims. The question of medical efficacy—of how and why cures worked—stands at the intersection between several fields of enquiry into early modern history. This event explores questions including the efficacy of minerals and lapidary cures, 'specific' medicines, blood-transfusions and bloodletting, and astrological medicine, amongst others.

This workshop is organized by Dr Philippa Carter, Prof Emma Spary, and Prof Daniel Margocsy, and is generously funded by the Wellcome Trust. Lunch, coffee, and refreshments will be provided on both days.
