EEK A MOUSE
Ludicrous, bizarre and uniquely original, few entertainers have had such a profound effect on the reggae dancehall scene as Eek A Mouse.
Revered for his wit and humour, biting social commentary and infectious energy, Eek A Mouse became a household name in Jamaica through his signature vocal style called ‘sing jaying’ a combination of toasting and singing with a strong percussive element
His high-pitched vocal style would set him apart from his peers, but what truly elevates him above the rest is the quality of his melodies and music.
DAWN PENN
Dawn Penn is a Grammy nominated Artist of the original queens of reggae music. First female reggae artist to perform at the BET Awards and a native of Kingston, Jamaica, she grew up in a musical family, studying piano, classical violin and performing with her sisters Pat and Audrey in churches. Her first recording “When I’m Gonna Be Free” was in 1966. She then recorded for the legendary Coxsone Dodd at Studio One and her first hit came in 1967 with the title “You Don’t Love Me – No, No, No”, one of the most famous reggae hits of all-time which has been covered by countless artists around the world including Beyonce, Rihanna, Sean Paul, Wu-Tang Clan, Eve, J Millz and Lily Allen to name a few.
SCIENTIST-DUBMASTER
Scientist, is a legendary Jamaican recording engineer and producer, born in 1960, who rose to fame in the 1980s mixing dub music. A protégé of King Tubby, he learned his craft at Tubby's studio before developing his own extravagant mixing style, characterised by deep, bass-heavy sound, wild album titles, and distinctive artwork. Scientist pioneered complex, layered mixes, especially during his time at Channel One Studios, and his innovative work continues to influence modern dub and electronic music.
TIPPA IRIE is a British reggae singer and DJ from Brixton, London. He first came to prominence in the early 1980s as an MC on the South London reggae soundsystem Saxon Studio International.
He first achieved national exposure on night-time BBC Radio 1 in the mid-1980s, with the singles "It's Good To Have The Feeling You're The Best" and "Complain Neighbour" (on Greensleeves Records), before achieving a UK Top 40 hit in 1986 with "Hello Darling".
He has collaborated with Alexander O'Neal, Long Beach Dub All Stars, The Skints, and Chali 2na. He enjoyed further success in 2003, when he appeared on The Black Eyed Peas' track "Hey Mama" He has also collaborated with the London-based avant-dancehall outfit The Bug, on the single "Angry" from the album London Zoo.
KIKO BUN
It’s not often that an artist comes along with a truly unique demeanour, one that stands out as incomparable to the rest of the landscape.
North-West Londoner Kiko Bun is one in a million. A rare artist that offers a contemporary voice for his generation of music that is utterly timeless. Blending contemporary versions of reggae, soul and hip-hop, Kiko Bun collaborates with artists across generations and genres to infiltrate the mainstream with something truly unique. A true crate-digger of vintage music, Kiko takes his influences from Panama’s big bass sound, the London lifestyle and a slower pace of metropolitan life.
LAID BLAK
Laid Blak represents the quintessential Bristol music story, celebrating 20 years in the business this year. They have deservedly cemented themselves not just in Bristol’s honorary list but are highly thought of right across the UK.
2022 saw the band win Reggae Album of the Year voted by the people and awarded by the UK Reggae Fraternity, for its release of ‘From the Vaults’. The single release ‘Golden’ from the album was showcased on many radio stations, on BBC 6 Music with Craig Charles, a big advocate.
SASHA STEPPA
Sasha Steppa hails from Bristol and heralds the new wave of sound system selectas. From a young emerging, vital vinyl collector of strictly Roots, Reggae and Dub she has grown her presence in the UK & Europe over the past 10 years.
Sasha has been a vital pillar of the Bristol music scene for some time and is now the first female in Bristol to launch a Roots and Dub orientated soundsystem, built by the legendary QSS. Having performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Boomtown, Love Saves the Day and Rototom Sunsplash, one of Europe’s biggest reggae festivals, it’s safe to say that Sasha is playing her part in putting Roots and Dub Music on the Map.
Sasha’s mission is to spread the message of the music, that message being peace, love and unity, as well as inspiring her audience to embrace who they are throughout her performances. “Love and Unity are the keys to set us free.
