Tinker Visiting Professor Talk: Edwin Román-Ramírez – A Teotihuacan Neighborhood in Tikal, Guatemala

In Mesoamerica, the presence of foreign neighborhoods has been identified primarily at Teotihuacan and at several sites in the Maya region, such as Montana on the Pacific South Coast of Guatemala, and Kaminaljuyu, in present-day Guatemala City. However, in the Maya Lowlands, it has been more challenging to identify neighborhoods inhabited by non-local populations. This talk by Tinker Visiting Professor Edwin Román-Ramírez presents new evidence recovered by the South Tikal Archaeological Project (PAST), including architectural features, ritual and foundational deposits, ceramics, obsidian, artwork, and construction methods that deviate from Tikal's traditional patterns. Together, these findings suggest that approximately 200 meters south of the area known as the Lost World, there once existed a neighborhood associated with Teotihuacan culture. This area includes a large platform—referred to as the South Platform—on which a water reservoir, two elite palaces, four smaller houses, and a ceremonial complex were constructed between 250 and 500 AD.
Dr. Edwin Román-Ramírez is an archaeologist who earned his undergraduate degree from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. He holds a master’s degree (2011) and a PhD (2017) in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Román-Ramírez previously served as director of El Zotz Archaeological Project, and currently leads the Southern Tikal Archaeological Project, which focuses on urban planning and intercultural relations in Mesoamerica. He has also been a visiting professor at Skidmore College in the United States and at Universidad del Valle in Guatemala.
