Educational Session: Eco-Friendly Landscapes-Beyond the Grass
Schedule
Thu May 07 2026 at 06:00 pm to 07:30 pm
UTC-05:00Location
3800 Arboretum Dr, Dubuque, IA | Dubuque, IA
In this program, you’ll learn how lawns became the default and why they aren’t always the best option for our environment. We’ll explore practical, attractive alternatives that support pollinators, improve soil health, reduce water use, and require less time and maintenance than conventional lawns. From native plantings and pocket prairies to “soft landings” and pollinator-friendly design, you’ll walk away with ideas that work at a variety of scales from small yards to larger urban spaces.
This session will be led by Kaytlan Moeller, Dubuque County Conservation’s Mowing to Monarchs Coordinator, who works with communities and residents to convert underused turf into habitat. The presentation will highlight local success stories, common challenges, and simple steps you can take to start transforming your own landscape no matter your experience level.
Whether you’re a homeowner, renter, gardener, or simply curious about creating healthier urban ecosystems, this program offers inspiration and practical guidance for landscapes that do more than just look green.
