As a foster and adoptive mother, she has parented children with special needs, children receiving gifted services, typical children, and ESL learners. She served on the Fayette County Public Schools' Board of Education for 6 years and has testified multiple times before the Kentucky General Assumbly on legislation impacting Kentucky's kids.
