Educational Beekeeping Field-trip in Waterdown

This field trip is available to the existing students and the general public who have interest in beekeeping. The purpose of this field trip is to give the attendee's some exposure and experience with bees prior to starting beekeeping.

If your curious about beekeeping, have your first nuc(s) on order, never done beekeeping and want to learn, than this is the class for you.

In order to attend this field trip class, you must provide your own bee suit. It is recommended that you bring gloves, shoes or boots above your ankles, and your camera/phone to take photos!

If you are allergic to bees, you must contact the host prior to attending.

When you arrive, please park on the grass just off the gravel road. The host, Daniel Kneblewski, will gather all students and begin the apiary tour at 10 AM.

About the field-trip and what to expect:

• General introductions, history of the homestead and bees on the property.
• Learn how to put on your bee suit. Tips on how to stay protected with your PPE during bee inspections
• How to start a beekeeper's smoker and to make it last at least 20-30 minutes for beehive inspections.
• Learn what to expect when you see hives.
• See in hives in all stages of growth from small to large.
• Learn and educated on the Apis mellifera (honey bee) biology
• Learn how a beekeeping performs inspections
• Hold a frame and try to find a queen
• Ask questions and have fun!
