About this Event
Education as Liberation: Panel Discussion with Q&A
How can opportunities to develop critical thinking skills empower citizens?
What has become of the Enlightenment ideal that knowledge liberates individuals and strengthens rule by the people, and for the people?
How can our education system prime us to be engaged civic participants?
These are. few questions you can consider when you join us for our in-person panel discussion with local Portland artists, thinkers, and educators.
Taking a comparative view across the Anglo- and Francophone worlds, our panel will ask whether 18th-century philosophies of freedom and personal development through education can illuminate youth engagement and civic education today. They'll highlight differences and similarities in civic formation between France and the US, discussing educational structures and approaches to democratic participation in both countries. We'll close with a Q&A session that allows our audience to join the conversation.
Attendance is free, but we ask that you RSVP on the Alliance Française de Portland website: https://www.afportland.org/event-rsvp/panel-discussion-education-as-liberation-night-of-ideas-2026/
