Victorian themed walk in Edinburgh - 2026

This year, we’ll meet once again in Edinburgh for a relaxed Victorian promenade, planned to enjoy the city’s beautiful cherry blossoms.

This time, our walk will also include a Monet-inspired picnic in the lovely setting of the Royal Botanic Garden.

The gathering draws its inspiration from the years 1830–1890. While Victorian dress is required, this is not a strict reenactment, but rather a themed day devoted to atmosphere, leisure, and conviviality, so let yourself be guided by crinolines, top hats, walking sticks and lace brolly

Programme of the Day

11.00 a.m. — Assembly at the Ross Fountain, Princes Street

We shall meet by the fountain to take photographs before setting off towards the Old Town, strolling through districts shaped by Victorians, past cemeteries, closes, and ancient squares.

1.00 p.m. — Afternoon Tea at The Willow Tearooms

A pause for refreshment and society. Afternoon tea is entirely optional; those who prefer may remain at leisure about the city.

We shall reconvene at 3.00 p.m. to proceed together to the Botanic Garden.

3.00 p.m. — Departure for the Royal Botanic Garden

(Starting at the entrance of the tearoom)

We shall depart from the tearooms and make our way to the Royal Botanic Garden. Admission is free, and permission has kindly been granted for us to picnic and repose within the grounds.

Guests are welcome to bring items befitting a leisurely Victorian afternoon: books, picnic baskets, chess sets, sketching or painting materials, crochet or needlework, and the like.

Important — Afternoon Tea Booking

Those wishing to partake in afternoon tea are kindly asked to visit

The Willow Tearooms Edinburgh website and book for 1.00 p.m., requesting that their table be added to the Victorian event, under the name Elizabeth Stewart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What may we do after the Botanic Garden closes?

-Weather permitting, we may remove to the garden adjoining Inverleith Park, concluding the day with a final stroll beside Inverleith Pond.

What if the weather proves unfavourable?

-In the event of light rain, we shall meet at 11.00 a.m. inside the National Gallery rather than at the Ross Fountain.

Should the weather be decidedly inclement, we shall decide at 3.00 p.m., outside the tearooms, whether to visit museums instead, foregoing the Botanic Garden.

May I attend only part of the day?

-Certainly. Guests may join the morning walk, the afternoon portion, the tea only, or any combination thereof.

Is period dress required?

-Preferably Victorian, but an outfit inspired by the Victorian or Regency era, or a sympathetic interpretation such as light Gothic or Steampunk, is accepted.

May children attend?

-There is no formal prohibition; children are welcome if suitably dressed. Please keep in mind that the day is slow-paced and may be boring for them. To help preserve the atmosphere, we kindly ask that tablets, handheld consoles, and similar distractions are avoided.

---

We very much look forward to your company, and to spending a relaxed and convivial afternoon together, united by our affection for this remarkable age, in what may surely be called Scotland’s most enchanting Victorian setting.
