About this Event

The AfPP Regional Conference in Edinburgh on Saturday 22 November 2025, is a unique opportunity for perioperative practitioners to come together, share expertise, and explore the latest developments shaping the dynamic perioperative field. It will cover local issues and topics relevant to perioperative professionals in the East Scotland region.

In today’s healthcare landscape, the demands placed on perioperative teams are greater than ever. Whether it’s adopting innovative surgical technologies, championing patient safety, or fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, your role is critical to delivering optimal outcomes for patients. This conference is designed to empower you with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to continue excelling in your practice.

Info: Delivering the best healthcare can require providers to be working at their peak however addressing high performance is not often recognised as a priority and may be compromised by the system we work in. We need to understand how team, and individual performance, is impacted by the way we work and develop strategies to ameliorate this effect. // LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Session 5: Supporting Staff, Improving Safety: Critical Incident Debriefing
Host: Kelly Porteous

Info: This session explores perioperative practitioners’ experiences of critical incident debriefing in the UK, highlighting barriers such as time constraints, blame culture, and variability in facilitation quality. Drawing on qualitative data, it examines the emotional & educational value of effective debriefing & identifies risks when it is neglected. Recommendations include implementing hybrid debrief models, structured facilitator training, and the development of adaptable guidelines to improve practice. Attendees will gain insight into supporting staff wellbeing, fostering a learning culture, & enhancing patient safety through effective debriefing strategies tailored to the unique demands of the perioperative environment. // LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify barriers to effective critical incident debriefing. 2. Evaluate the impact of structured debriefing on staff wellbeing, team learning, & patient safety outcomes. 3.Propose practical strategies to enhance critical incident debriefing.
