Edgewood Historic Cemetery volunteers are planning a cleanup of the Cemetery at 989 East High Street. The event will take place on Saturday, October 11, from 10am - 2pm [Rain Date: Saturday, October 18].
Hobart’s Run and generous local eateries will provide a light lunch for the hard-working volunteers. Individuals willing to bring their own weedwhacker or push mower are welcomed; other tools will be provided at the Cemetery for workers who help beautify the gravesites. No green thumbs are required.
In addition, Hobart’s Run encourages businesses and civic organizations to support the Adopt-a-Gravestone headstone restoration project also led by Kelly Fenstermacher. Learn more and donate here https://givebutter.com/AdoptAGravestone.
Without financial support, many deteriorating, toppled stones will remain unrepaired, and the grounds cannot be properly maintained. Old burial methods as well as a very active and destructive groundhog population have contributed to the cemetery’s challenging situation. Edgewood’s caretaker abandoned town and the cemetery's care in 2012, so all mowing and other maintenance has been left up to volunteers. Friends of the Cemetery also welcome collaborative fundraising events organized by civic groups to assist this ongoing effort to bring dignity to those buried on the grounds.
