About this Event
Ed Ballo, the "Urban Detective" from the Fenway News will lead two tours in the Fenway.
Tour 1 from 3-4:30 PM will focus on the "East Fens". Historical and prehistoric foundations of the Massachusett peoples. Daming the bay in the early 19th century, early industry and subsequent landfill. Sights include the Christian Science Complex, Fenway-Boylston Street Historic District (Johnson Gates), row houses. Urban Planning initiatives of the late 19th century, "Beaux-Art" architecture and urban planning.
Start: 3 PM in front of the Christian Science Publishing House, (glassed entrance pavilion) on Mass. Ave.Finish: 4:30 PM in front of the statue of John Boyle O'Reilly.
Tour 2 from 5:30-7 PM will have a "West Fens" focus. Starting at the John Boyle O'Reilly Statue. Olmstead's Vision, the Back Bay Fens as water management and urban amenity along with subsequent additions and degradations of the water plane in the late 20th century. Water and planting renaissance in the early 21st century. Public sculpture; Robert Burns, Japanese Temple Bell, WWII memorial, Paul Manship. (West) Fenway as the next frontier for schools, museums and hospitals in the early 20th century. Economic "engine" of Longwood Medical.
Start: 5:30 PM in front of the statue of John Boyle O'Reilly.Finish: 7 PM in front of the Gardner Museum.
