About this Event
This Third Edition Seminar series by ECUSA Washington DC, in collaboration with the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., will address topics such as gene and cell therapy.
Speakers Dr. Gloria Aseguinolaza and Dr. Murat Kalayoglu will address these issues in their respective seminars, “Targeting the second largest organ in the human body to fix inherited diseases" and “Cell therapy for Autoimmunity”, designed for a non-specialized audience without assuming prior knowledge of these topics .
This setup provides a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with these internationally renowned experts in a Q&A session afterwards.

About Dr. Gloria González Aseguinolaza
Dr. Gloria González Aseguinolaza is a leading expert in gene therapy, focusing on rare diseases. She is the Director of the Gene Therapy Program for Rare Diseases at CIMA, Principal Investigator for the Advanced Therapies for Rare Liver Diseases group, and Co-founder/Scientific Director of Vivet Therapeutics. She holds a Biology degree from the University of the Basque Country and a Ph.D. from the Autonomous University of Madrid, with postdoctoral work at New York University on malaria research.
Her research spans gene therapy for hereditary diseases, the development of gene therapy vectors, immune modulation, and animal models for viral hepatitis. Dr. González Aseguinolaza led the Horizon 2020 AIPGENE project, which resulted in the first clinical trial for a hereditary liver disease. She has supervised over 20 theses, authored 110+ scientific papers, and holds 20 patents. A key player in scientific organizations, she is the current President of the Spanish Society of Gene and Cell Therapy and a board member of the European and American societies in the field.
Dr. González Aseguinolaza has made significant contributions to gene therapy, especially for rare liver diseases, and continues to influence both research and clinical applications globally.
About Dr. Murat Kalayoglu
Dr. Murat Kalayoglu is Co-Founder of Cartesian and served as the company’s President and CEO prior to its merger with Selecta in November 2023.
Prior to Cartesian, Dr. Kalayoglu was co-founder and CEO of Topokine, which he led from concept to late-stage clinical trials, followed by a successful sale to Allergan (NYSE:AGN). Dr. Kalayoglu was also co-founder and COO of HealthHonors Corporation, which he led from concept to commercialization, followed by a successful sale to Healthways (NASDAQ:HWAY). Dr. Kalayoglu is a board-certified ophthalmologist who completed his residency and research Fellowship at Harvard, MD/PhD in immunology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

The best way to arrive is by public transportation. The closest Metro station is Columbia Heights (Green line). Limited metered and two-hour zoned parking is available in the surrounding neighborhoods. Public parking garage is available at DC USA Shopping Mall (Columbia Heights Metro Station).
