About this Event
All are welcome to this field trip associated with our Ecology of the Blue Ridge class, taught by Dan Lazar. Participants will travel in their own vehicles (or arrange carpooling as desired) to various nearby ecological communities, ranging from flood plain forests along the Swannanoa River to northern hardwood and spruce-fir forests at higher elevations. The field class will include stops at early successional old-field and scrub pine sites as well as mid-elevation oak and rich cove communities.
This is one of two scheduled field experiences: October 18th & 19th. Dan's Ecology Walk focused on Field to Forest Succession will be held on October 24th. These other classes have separate registration links.
Dan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005.
