About this Event

"The eyes of the future are looking back at us,

and they are praying that we might see beyond our own time.”

-Terry Tempest Williams

On the final afternoon of the 50th anniversary weekend, we invite you to be part of envisioning what the next 50 years might look like: How can we support ourselves, each other and the wider community in connecting with hope and taking action together? What might the role of the Salisbury Centre and its community, as we - and those coming after us - navigate the challenges of our times? How can we become ancestors to a thriving future?

To explore our wishes and intentions for change, we will be drawing from “The Work That Reconnects”, a form of transformative group work developed by Joanna Macy. Over the course of the afternoon we will tap into awe, wonder and connection, give space to our emotional responses to the collective mess we’re in, and practice changing our perspective on what’s unfolding. We will imagine ourselves into the shoes of future generations to explore what new steps the Salisbury Centre community might take towards greater resilience and justice in our world.

Crafting this vision will be a longer-term journey. Join us in sowing the first seeds!

"Hope just means another world might be possible, not promised, not guaranteed.

Hope calls for action; action is impossible without hope."

- Rebecca Solnit

About the Facilitators

Hannah Brazil

Hannah has been part of the Salisbury Centre community since attending a Work that Reconnects workshop with Olga shortly after moving to Edinburgh in 2019. She is one of the Climate Champions at the Centre, has contributed to many community events and founded the Salisbury Centre Seed Library. Hannah is a passionate community gardener, facilitator, environmental anthropologist and gatherer of seeds and stories. Her research and work revolve around human-nature (dis)connection and more-than-human wellbeing, focussing on seed saving, nurturing regenerative culture, and exploring the stories we tell of who we are in relation to nature. She’s been involved in sustainable community food growing, permaculture and collaborative education for social change projects around the world.

Olga Bloemen

Olga is a former resident at the Salisbury Centre and previously helped to organise different community events at the Centre, such as the weekly soup suppers and the seasonal festivals. She was born in the Netherlands and moved to Scotland quite a few years ago to study Social Anthropology. Now, as a facilitator with Tripod, she supports groups and organisations working for social and ecological justice in Scotland and beyond. She’s interested in how we can tackle the root causes of the climate emergency and build collective forms of resistance. She’s been exploring the Work That Reconnects as a way of taking care of the inner dimension of activism. She tends to agree with Mary Oliver: “There is only one question: How to love this world.”
