In this session we would like to explore the intra-European case study of the dual forces of colonial dispossession and ecocide in Sápmi, home of the indigenous Sámi people. A general introduction to the region, its history and ongoing exploitation will be presented by means of a recently published booklet by the Swedish collective Kolonierna, titled 'No Mine in Gállok'. A representative from Kolonierna will highlight issues related to the colonial oppression of the Nordic states' indigenous population, the techno-optimism of a Green Transition spearheading a new wave of extractivist devastation. This will be followed by a discussion with professor Scandinavion Literature Joksie Biesemans.
We invite the audience to engage in an exchange about both the specific case study and the increasingly pressing issue of green colonialism generally. The point of departure being a DIY publication, not only scholarly engagement with the topic but also and especially informal discussion are heartily invited.
