Ballestone-Stansbury House, commonly referred to as Ballestone Manor, is one of Baltimore County’s oldest surviving homes and a notable example of early Federal-style architecture. The original section of the house was built in the late 18th century by the Stansbury family, prominent landowners whose roots in the area dated back to Maryland’s colonial period. Over time, additions were made to the property, transforming it into a larger farmhouse and estate that reflected the growth of the surrounding community.

The manor was part of a large tract of land tied to tobacco farming, shipping, and trade along the Back River and Chesapeake Bay region. Through generations, the home witnessed major periods of Maryland history, including the Revolutionary era, the War of 1812, and the transition from colonial agriculture to a more industrialized society.

By the mid-20th century, the historic structure had fallen into decline. In 1969, Baltimore County acquired the property to preserve it from demolition. Restoration efforts throughout the 1970s carefully returned the house to its early 19th-century appearance using historical records and recovered artifacts. The manor later reopened as a museum and educational site, showcasing period furnishings, architecture, and local history.

Today, Ballestone Manor is known not only for its historical significance but also for local folklore and paranormal legends. Stories of unexplained footsteps, shadowy figures, and strange occurrences have made the estate a popular destination for ghost tours and public paranormal investigations, blending regional history with supernatural intrigue.
