Echoes Across Time

Please join us for 'Echoes Across Time,' an intimate gathering with Yéyé Taiwo Lijadu of The Lijadu Sisters, in conversation with her niece, filmmaker Olukemi Lijadu, ahead of Olukemi’s forthcoming film about her legendary aunts.

Olukemi will guide a discussion with Yéyé Taiwo, featuring a (pre)screening of her work-in-progress film and a special listening session. This evening is about building momentum around a story that honors the matriarchs of an unparalleled musical legacy.

The music of The Lijadu Sisters has often been described as ahead of its time, but in truth, it transcends time itself. Their sound is a convergence of music and magic, action and activism, love and laughter, sorrow and celebration. Join us as we delve into their legacy and the living presence of Yéyé Taiwo Lijadu.

In 2018, Olukemi sat with her aunts in their Harlem living room, camera in hand, as they finished each other’s sentences and proclaimed a united comeback. The Lijadu Sisters—Kehinde and Taiwo—are musical icons. Three years after Kehinde’s passing, Taiwo continues their journey, re-releasing their albums and charting this path alone—physically, but with Kehinde ever-present in spirit.

As a generation of African musical legends ages, it is critical that we preserve, amplify, and engage with their legacies—not just as history, but as something alive and resonant in the present. Join us in this act of live archiving. Memory is all we have, and we create it together.
