About this Event

Echoes Across Horizons: American Voices in Classical Piano
Featuring Classical Pianist Junwen Liang

Echoes Across Horizons: American Voices in Classical Piano: This program celebrates the vast and multifaceted landscape of American classical music through a collection of voices that echo across time, genre, and culture. From the lyrical impressionism of Amy Beach and the spiritual depth of Florence Price, to the cross-cultural energy of Tan Dun and the theatrical elegance of Stephen Hough’s musical theatre transcriptions, these works embody a vibrant conversation between traditions both inherited and reimagined. At the heart of the program is a belief in the power of diversity—musical, cultural, and personal—to enrich the classical tradition. These pieces reflect stories often overlooked: voices of women, immigrants, and composers bridging worlds between concert halls and popular stages. Together, they invite listeners to reconsider what “American music” means, revealing a tapestry that is as rich and resonant as the country itself.

Praised by Richard Goode as “a very gifted pianist and a musician of great sensitivity,” Junwen Liang has been recognized by New York Concert Review and The American Prize for his refined and expressive artistry. Since 2024, his career as a recitalist has expanded across the United States and China, with appearances at major series including Sevenars Music Festival, Fripp Island Friends of Music, Saugerties Pro Musica, Chamber On The Mountain, and Boston Court Pasadena. The 2025/26 season brings further engagements nationwide and abroad, alongside the preparation of his debut album with Sheva Collection in collaboration with Naxos of America. A prizewinner of many international competitions and a graduate of the Peabody Institute under Richard Goode, he is based in Philadelphia, where he teaches and coaches chamber music at the University of Pennsylvania.
