About this Event
Updated ten years on from its original outing in 2016, Eastrogen Rising asks urgent and necessary questions:
Where are the women that history forgot?
Where are the women that history erased?
Created in response to the Abbey Theatre’s 1916 Centenary programme , which included only one show written by a woman, Eastrogen Rising was born out of the anger, energy, and solidarity of the Waking the Feminists movement.
The result is a fast-paced, celebratory, and provocative rebel cabaret that brings to life the stories of women ranging from Constance Markievicz to messenger girls, looters, widows, fighters, rebels, and those whose names never made it into the history books.
The show blends songs, poetry, spoken word, theatre pieces, and performance, moving between the comic, the tragic, and the rabble-rousing. The overall theme explores the under-representation of women, and the broader (mis)treatment of women from 1916 right up to the present day. As the show looks back at the past, it also asks a challenging contemporary question: has much really changed?
Originally staged at the Five Lamps Arts Festival in Dublin in March and April 2016, Eastrogen Rising was a sell-out success, running for two additional nights due to popular demand. It went on to play to packed houses at the Ó Bhéal Centenary Celebration in Cork and at The Roddy McClorey Social Club in Belfast. Following this success, the troupe went on to create the highly acclaimed Revolting Women: A Rebel Cabaret.
Now returning by public demand, Eastrogen Rising remains as powerful, relevant, and resonant as ever.
Created and produced by BeRn.
Featuring Abby Oliviera, Catherine Ann Cullen, Fionnuala Halpin, Sonya Mulligan, BeRn and many more…
