Eastern European Film Weeks - Closing night

We are now in the last week of the Eastern European Film Weeks in Leuven. Join us for two more unique opportunities to get a close look at, and a better understanding of, some of the most crucial yet least known developments in Europe today. Both evenings bring the films together with people who can help you make sense of them.

James Jones, US/UK, 2024, 89 min, documentary
Follow investigative journalist Christo Grozev (Bellingcat), activist Vladimir Kara-Murza and an anonymous whistleblower from inside Russia’s poison programme, as they expose the human cost of the Kremlin’s covert operations against dissidents, including the poisoning of Alexei Navalny.
Introduced by Ria Laenen, Professor of East European, Eurasian and International Politics, and one of Belgium’s most prominent commentators on the region, who will place the film in its historical context.

� Courage (closing night) | Friday 30 October, 19:30
Aliaksei Paluyan, Germany/Belarus, 2021, 90 min, documentary
Three actors from Minsk’s underground Belarus Free Theatre are swept into the 2020 mass protests against Lukashenko’s regime. Shot on the ground, the film is a close, personal portrait of ordinary people’s courage under an authoritarian crackdown.
Director Aliaksei Paluyan will be our special guest. He will talk about his film with Peter Vermeersch, Professor of Political Science at KU Leuven, and take questions from the audience.
