East Meets West: The Music of the Philippines

Welcome to East Meets West: The Music of the Philippines! Join us for an afternoon of vibrant Filipino music at Studio A with the amazing Kapwa duo comprised of Katrina Saporsantos and Benjamin Dia. Immerse yourself in the rich sounds and rhythms of the Philippines--their concert features a mix of old and traditional music from the Philippines to newer works by Filipino composers whose writing styles are influenced by those traditions while being written in a completely Western musical language. They will be performing pieces for voice, piano, and Philippine instruments by composers such as Nicanor Abelardo, Augusto Espino, Eudenice Palaruan, Robin Estrada, Josefino Toledo, and more. They will also be premiering some of their own compositions in this concert. From folk songs to modern works infusing Filipino traditional with Western traditions, this event promises to be a meaningful and fun celebration of Filipino musical heritage. Filipino soprano Katrina Saporsantos and pianist Benjamin Dia comprise the duo Kapwa. Rina holds a Master of Music and Professional Studies Certificate in classical voice from the Manhattan School of Music while Benjie obtained his Master of Sacred Music in piano from Westminster College. Both are alums of the University of the Philippines.

One World, One Music is a concert series featuring cultural music from around the globe. It is through our shared love of music that we are able to foster a kindred spirit of understanding and respect of where we come from and where we are going as inhabitants of our one world. These concerts all take place in our intimate 'listening room" which feels like a hybrid between a living room and a concert hall. Themed food and beverage is also included in the ticket price for all events.
