East Bay Waltz: We're Back!!!

Sat Aug 20 2022 at 04:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Berkeley Finnish Hall | Berkeley, CA

It's time! It may feel like long ago that we were last together, but dust off those dancing shoes because we couldn't be more thrilled to waltz across the floor once more. We get to have the music, the moves, and the wonderful community of people who come to East Bay Waltz together again!! We know things have changed for many since we last danced, and that includes us. We’re now dancing on the third Saturday and earlier in the evening, so we can keep the windows open and so that those who are inclined can still grab tasty foods afterwards before Berkeley shuts down.
The introductory class (from 4:00-5:30 p.m.) will be on rotary waltz, which is so important that it's usually just called the "waltz". Bob Galloway and Caroline Vurlumis will teach everyone how to lead or follow. No experience or partner necessary! This lesson is great for anyone who doesn't yet feel confident in 3/4, even if you've taken a lesson before.
The intermediate class (from 5:30-7:00 p.m.) with Alan Kline and Laura Gorrin will also be on waltz juuuust in case it's been a while. We’ll review leading or following both rotary and cross-step waltz and then open up for requests. We know there are moves that we all used to know and almost remember and things many people were yearning to learn. Bring your requests or your favorites that you wish more people knew and we’ll go through as many of them as we can.
Then the dance party (from 7-10 p.m.)! DJs Bob Galloway, Caroline Vurlumis, Mark Isaacson, and Alan Kline have new and exciting dance tunes to share with all you dancing bears! There will be waltzes, swings, polkas, and other favorites for three hours of fun.
As always, EBW is a come-as-you-are, all ages, gender neutral, no-partner-required, ask anyone to dance event where we value consent and everyone is welcome. Please make sure to bring proof of vaccination, wear a mask, wear non-marking shoes, bring cash for admission (exact change is really helpful if you've got it), not leave valuables sitting unattended in the dance hall, and not wear any fragrances or perfumes.
$12 admission for lessons and dance.
$8 for dance only.
Special student rate of $8 for lesson and dance.
Times still being what they are, we are enforcing Covid safety policies:
• You must wear a N95 or KN95 mask over your mouth and nose at all times when inside the Finnish Hall. Please step outside or go to the front stairs to eat or drink; do not take your mask off to eat or drink inside the hall
• All attendees will be required to be "up-to-date" with their vaccinations for Covid-19. All attendees must show proof of vaccination upon entry: a vaccination card, or photo of one, or a QR code. "Up-to-date" means that the person has received all doses in the primary series and all boosters recommended for the general population (currently 1 booster).
• If you have symptoms or believe you are sick, please stay home. This is basic dance courtesy for all contagious diseases, not just Covid-19.
• EBW staff will keep the windows and doors open to the extent possible. Do not close outside windows or doors without checking with us.
We hope to see you there!
