East Bank | Cooking and Cocktails in 1776: An America 250 Food and Drink Demonstration

Two cooking and cocktail demos will be held at the regional libraries in June in commemoration of America 250 celebrations. The first demonstration will take place on Tuesday, June 9, 6:30 pm, at the West Bank Regional Library (2751 Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey). The second will be held on Thursday, June 11, 6:30 pm, at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 W. Napoleon Avenue in Metairie). The speakers for both sessions are Nora Wetzel and Elizabeth Pearce.
Wetzel will discuss what soldiers were eating 250 years ago during the era of the American Revolution, such as ash cakes with molasses, and beans with pork salt. .
Pearce, a local mixologist and owner of Drink and Learn, will talk about the beverages consumed at the time, including rum-based mixed drinks, and she will demonstrate a contemporary cocktail made with rum, the Hurricane.
Patrons will be allowed to sample the dishes and drinks that are prepared during the demonstration. However, these demonstrations are not intended to serve as meals for those in the audience. Food will not be sold. This event is free and open to the public; no registration is required.
