Earth Tongues:
An ensemble dedicated to exploring the scope and scale of experimental improvised music, Earth Tongues approaches each performance as a chance to build new, challenging work that take silence and ambient sound into full account. Consisting of Carlo Costa on percussion, Joe Moffett on trumpet, and Dan Peck on tuba, the trio creates immersive pieces that weave through a Venn diagram of music, noise, and quiet.
"Ohio, Earth Tongues’ second release on Neither/Nor Records, is their most ambitious work to date. A long-form piece that stretches the very fabric of improvised music to the limit, Ohio envelopes the listener with intensely quiet textures, glacial build-ups and surprising, thunderous moments of noise. It is a double-album inspired by the sonic extremes found in the natural and industrial worlds, and an ode to the inescapably human desire to come to terms with those worlds."-Peter Margasak/Bandcamp
Dan Blacksberg, Carlos Santiago & Sonali Singh trio:
Described by Bandcamp Daily as “a maestro who effortlessly hops between—and, ultimately, deconstructs—genres with abandon,” Dan’s musical vision has led him to compose music with a wide reach. From writing danceable klezmer melodies on his album Radiant Others – the first klezmer album to feature the trombone as the lead instrument – to the free-jazz of the Dan Blacksberg Trio, to genre-busting projects like his Hasidic doom metal band Deveykus and 2017 suite Together in Struggle, Dan forges music with a voice that “aims to infuse the fearless avant-garde with timeless sounds and techniques, and vice versa.” (WXPN’s The Key).
Carlos Santiago was born and raised in Philadelphia and was educated at The Hartt School of Music and Temple University. Approaching music from multiple standpoints, Carlos has relished performing in a wide variety of musical settings and styles such as the multi - disciplinary Bismuth String Quartet, the complex mathematical compositions of the rock band Normal Love, soloing with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, playing Tango, Salsa, and Afro-Caribbean jazz with Sonic Liberation Front, or Roma jazz with BeauDjango. Past teachers include John Blake, Diane Monroe, Yusef Lateef, Adolf Sandole, Louis Lanza, and Nicholas Mann. Sharing the unity of all of these types of music is the driving force behind his passion for sonic exploration.
From busking on Broad street to drumming in a darkened cemetery, Sonali lets themselves be swept into the madness and passion of Philadelphia's creative and improvisation scene with handsome bassoon sidekick in tow. They ache to soothe hurt souls, much like theirs, on this shared journey. Through foundations of music therapy and the power of improvisation, Sonali hopes to foster a sense of community, nurturing and .. aaand.. aaand you get it. Make music with me. Make joy with me. Make space for grief, anger, loss, and pain with me. Or let's scream for no reason!
